Overview Each year the AFSCME Council 93 Memorial Scholarship Fund awards ten separate $1,000 scholarships to students enrolled in accredited postsecondary programs. These awards are given in remembrance of our departed members and may be renewed for each year the recipient continues their studies, up to a maximum of four consecutive years. Over the last two decades, the Fund has distributed tens of thousands of dollars to deserving members of AFSCME families.
Who may apply
- Applicants must be Council 93 members or their spouse, child, stepchild, grandchild, or other legal dependent.
- Candidates must be accepted to, or currently enrolled in, an accredited two‑year or four‑year college or university, community college, graduate program, or an approved technical or trade school.
- Only one application per person will be accepted.
- Renewal is permitted annually but limited to no more than four consecutive years of support.
Application requirements and judging
- Submit a typed personal essay addressing the prompt: “Unions have been important to my family because…” The essay should be between 500 and 750 words. Applicants are encouraged to speak with Union members in their lives to inform their responses.
- The Scholarship Committee will evaluate and score all essays; the ten essays receiving the highest ratings will be selected for awards. To preserve impartiality, identifying details (for example, individual names, local numbers, and city/town names) will be removed before the Committee reviews submissions.
- Essays will be screened for use of AI-generated content.
- The Scholarship Committee’s decisions are final.
